European Troops Arrive in Greenland as Diplomatic Standoff with US Deepens

“Operation Arctic Endurance” sees deployment of forces from France, Germany, and Scandinavia to Nuuk following failed talks in Washington.

NUUK, GREENLAND (January 15, 2026) – Military personnel from France, Germany, Norway, and Sweden have begun arriving in Greenland today as part of “Operation Arctic Endurance,” a joint security mission that observers say is a direct response to escalating tensions over the island’s future.

The deployment involves a contingent of French mountain infantry and a German reconnaissance team, who arrived via an A400M transport plane earlier this morning. They join Swedish and Norwegian forces already in the region to support the Danish military presence. Danish Defense Minister Troels Lund Poulsen confirmed the operation, stating the intention is to “establish a more permanent military presence” with NATO allies on a rotational basis.

The move comes just 24 hours after high-stakes meetings in Washington D.C. between Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen, Greenlandic officials, and the US administration ended in a stalemate. Following the meeting, US President Donald Trump reiterated his stance that the United States “needs” Greenland for national security purposes, specifically citing the “Golden Dome” defense system and the need to deter Russian and Chinese influence in the Arctic.

“We have a fundamental disagreement,” Rasmussen told reporters, emphasizing that the territory is not for sale. While officials in Copenhagen have described the European deployment as a routine exercise to explore framework conditions for security, the timing sends a clear message of European solidarity with Nuuk amidst fears of a potential unilateral move by the United States.
