Trump Threatens Tariffs on European Allies in Renewed Dispute Over Greenland

The US President escalates tensions with Denmark and the EU, warning of economic consequences if “strategic discussions” regarding the Arctic island are ignored.

WASHINGTON (January 17, 2026) – In a sharp escalation of transatlantic tensions, President Donald Trump has threatened to impose sweeping tariffs on European imports if Denmark and the European Union refuse to engage in talks regarding the “strategic future” of Greenland.

Speaking to reporters on Saturday, Trump expressed frustration over what he termed as Europe’s “blocking” of American interests in the Arctic. “We protect them, we trade with them, but they won’t let us talk about Greenland. It’s a very strategic place, and we need access. If they don’t want to make a deal, we will have to put tariffs on their cars and wine,” Trump stated.

The President’s comments mark a revival of his previous interest in purchasing the semi-autonomous territory, a proposal that was firmly rejected by Copenhagen during his first term. This time, however, the rhetoric has shifted from a purchase offer to economic coercion, raising fears of a new trade war between Washington and Brussels.
