Warning Issued: Kenya Faces High Risk of Election Violence

NAIROBI: A severe warning has been issued regarding the stability of Kenya as it enters 2026. With the general election countdown set for August 2027, the next 12 months are being described as a “make or break” period for the nation’s democracy.

Why the Fear? The alarm bells are ringing for three main reasons:

  • Broken Trust: The credibility of the election body (IEBC) is reportedly at an “all-time low” following chaotic by-elections late last year.
  • State Power: Violence is increasingly feared to be a tool used by state actors to consolidate power rather than just ethnic conflict.
  • Gen Z Unrest: The youth-led protests that shook the government in 2024 are expected to reignite, potentially leading to clashes with security forces.

The Digital Danger For the first time, AI-driven disinformation is listed as a primary threat. Fake news and deepfakes could flood social media, triggering panic and justifying heavy-handed police responses. Observers note that regional pressure (from the East African Community) and international oversight are “in decay,” leaving Kenyans vulnerable. “Violence next year is not inevitable,” the report states, “but preventing it requires urgent action now.”
