Malaika Arora Defies Ageist Trolls, Calls Item Songs Empowering at

The diva refuses to “tone it down,” stating dance is a powerful form of expression.

Mumbai, India, January 14, 2026: Bollywood’s original “Chaiyya Chaiyya” girl, Malaika Arora, has once again proven why she remains an unmatched icon of confidence and grace. Speaking on The Namrata Zakaria Show on YouTube, the 52-year-old actor-dancer addressed the persistent online trolling and age-shaming she faces, particularly regarding her choice to continue performing in high-energy “item songs” or special dance numbers.

Responding to critics who suggest she should “dress her age” or “tone down” her performances, Malaika was unapologetic. “Why not? Why do I need to tone it down or be apologetic about it?” she questioned during the interview. She emphasized that dance is an art form and a personal expression that should be enjoyed in its “true glory.” Having recently featured in hit tracks like Poison Baby from the film Thamma and Yo Yo Honey Singh’s Chillgum, Malaika noted that performing these roles at 52 feels like a blessing and a testament to her disciplined lifestyle.

The actor also challenged the derogatory “item song” label, noting that while the industry has evolved to give these songs more narrative context, they remain deeply empowering for her. “It is very, very empowering. It makes me feel amazing,” she shared. Malaika expressed hope that her journey serves as an example for other women to break societal barriers and embrace their passions regardless of their age. She credited her son, Arhaan Khan, as one of her biggest supporters in dealing with toxic social media comments, helping her maintain a focus on her truth rather than the noise of anonymous trolls.
