Accused Ankit Kumar arrested after a police encounter; tried to stage the murder as a road accident.
Greater Noida, January 14, 2026: In a chilling incident that has shocked the Beta-2 sector of Greater Noida, a 27-year-old woman was allegedly murdered by a rejected suitor who then attempted to disguise the crime as a hit-and-run accident. The victim, identified as Deepa, a native of Mahoba district, worked at a private call centre in Noida’s Sector 60 and lived with her younger brother in a rented apartment.
The case came to light on Monday morning when residents discovered Deepa’s body tucked underneath a parked car near a local park. Deepa had been reported missing by her brother on Sunday night after she failed to return from her shift and her phone remained switched off. Initial forensic examinations suggested strangulation, prompting the police to launch a murder investigation immediately.
On Tuesday, the Greater Noida police arrested the accused, identified as Ankit Kumar, following a brief but violent encounter. Acting on a tip-off, a police team intercepted Kumar near the Dhakiya Wale Baba roundabout. When signaled to stop, Kumar allegedly opened fire on the officers. In the retaliatory firing that followed, Kumar sustained a bullet injury to his leg and was apprehended. During interrogation, Kumar confessed to the crime, stating that he was in love with Deepa but she had repeatedly rejected his marriage proposals.
Driven by rage, he strangled her on the night of January 11. To evade capture, he placed her body under a parked vehicle, hoping the police would mistake her death for an accidental fatality caused by a car. Police have recovered a stolen motorcycle, the victim’s mobile phone, and a country-made pistol from the accused. Kumar is currently undergoing treatment at a hospital under judicial custody.
