Opposition party alleges security forces breached Wine’s compound and forcibly removed him as early election results show President Museveni leading.
KAMPALA (January 16, 2026) – The National Unity Platform (NUP), Uganda’s main opposition party, stated late Friday that its leader and presidential candidate, Robert Kyagulanyi—better known as Bobi Wine—was forcibly removed from his home by military personnel.
According to a statement released by the party, an army helicopter landed inside Wine’s compound in Magere, outskirts of Kampala, before security forces “violently assaulted” his private guards and took him to an “unknown destination.” The incident occurred just a day after the country went to the polls in a tense general election.
The development follows a 48-hour siege of Wine’s residence, where he had been effectively placed under house arrest.”They broke the front door and stormed the house,” a party spokesperson said. This escalation comes amidst a nationwide internet blackout and partial election results released by the Electoral Commission, which show incumbent President Yoweri Museveni holding a commanding lead with approximately 74% of the vote. Wine, who has alleged “massive fraud” and ballot stuffing, was trailing with around 22%.
Neither the Ugandan military nor the government has officially confirmed Wine’s current location or legal status.
